Tara Watchorn returns to Walter Brown as WIH head coach – The Boston Hockey Blog

Tara Watchorn is not a new face to Walter Brown Arena, but today she made her first public appearance in the legendary rink under a new title.

In a “welcome back” reception, BU Athletics formally introduced Terrier Nation to the second coach for Boston University women’s ice hockey in team history.

With the fight song accompanying her as she walked to the ice at Walter Brown, Watchorn spoke to a crowd of family, BU Athletics staff, coaches of other teams and her players.

“This school, this te

Dog Pound Diary: It all came down to this – The Boston Hockey Blog

Scanning the crowd going into the final period of Thursday night’s semifinals, nobody seemed excited.

The raucous Minnesota fans, rowdy from the outset, were nearly silent. Even when their team entered the arena late Thursday afternoon, a crowd of Gopher fans was more energetic in 90-degree weather than they were entering the third with a 2-2 tie.

Despite their coach calling the Terriers a “favorite” on Wednesday’s media day, the Gopher fans expected their team — which had led USCHO and Pairwi

Big Red rematch en route to the Frozen Four – The Boston Hockey Blog

After a dominant 5-1 victory over one of the highest scoring teams in college hockey, the Terriers will now face a familiar foe with a chance to punch their ticket to the Frozen Four.

Red Hot Hockey will be making its triumphant debut in ManchVegas tomorrow night as the No. 5 Boston University men’s hockey team (28-10-0) take on the No. 12 Cornell Big Red (21-10-2).

The Big Red pulled off a major upset shutting out the defending champion Denver, who were also the fourth ranked team in the coun

Dog Pound Diary: Garden Party – The Boston Hockey Blog

For the first 60 minutes of Friday night’s semifinals, it looked like the TD Garden curse for BU was real.

Something about stepping onto the ice in the Garden seemed to draw the hockey-playing ability out of the Terriers, like in Space Jam when that alien guy stole Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing’s ability to play basketball to create the Monstars.

Who’s the alien guy in this scenario? Has to be Jerry York, right?

Thankfully, though, Dylan Peterson and Quinn Hutson were able to break that c

Dog Pound Diary: A Pot of Beans and Tears

The worst thing the Terriers did on Monday was score. Injecting a comatose Dog Pound with all that false hope so late in the game. The subsequent game-sealing goal to put Northeastern up 3-1 was like giving a little kid an ice cream cone just to take it from his hand and smush it in his face.

Soon after everyone in the fan section silently said to those around them “we need to get out of here.”

It was like a family leaving a haunted house at the end of a horror movie, and realizing they probab

Dog Pound Diary: A wild opening game for the Battle of Comm Ave – The Boston Hockey Blog

In a scene not unlike a midnight opening of Best Buy on Black Friday, streams of Terrier faithful sprinted up the stairs towards their seats when Agganis Arena opened Friday night. Instead of going on the hunt for a new PlayStation or a sick deal on AirPod Pros, these shoppers were in pursuit of something maybe a little more valuable –– a prime seat for the first game of this weekend’s Battle of Comm Ave series.

Julia Nearis’ overtime goal powers Terriers in upset of No.11 Vermont – The Boston Hockey Blog

The Boston University women’s hockey team (10-15-2, 9-12-2 Hockey East) won their fifth straight with an impressive 2-1 overtime upset against the 11th ranked University of Vermont Catamounts (18-10-1, 13-8-1 HE) at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday.

Senior forward Julia Nearis sealed the deal for BU with an overtime goal, firing the shot through the five-hole followed by a wicked celly.

BU CTE Center at forefront of chronic traumatic encephalopathy research

Researchers at Boston University have been at the forefront of the study of a degenerative brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

The disease, which is similar to other degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, has become commonly associated with contact sports like football and ice hockey. Michael Alosco, the lead investigator for the CTE Center at BU, said the disease develops most often from years of minor hits to the head.

2022 Power of Narrative: The matrix of editor, reporter and story

he relationship between writers and editors is one of the most important in journalism — and can one of the most challenging. Benoit Denizet-Lewis, a longtime magazine journalist and best-selling author, and Illena Silverman, deputy editor for features at The New York Times Magazine, have partnered on stories for 20 years now. “I feel like I was a child when you essentially gave me my career,” told Silverman.

War is all around us in the age of social media

Nothing encapsulates the uniqueness of our times better than the official Twitter account for the government of Ukraine tweeting a meme upon the occasion of the invasion of their country.

Sent in the early hours of the morning Thursday, the account tweeted a cartoon of Adolf Hitler embracing Vladimir Putin — almost as if he was a proud father of our century’s crazed authoritarian strongman.

Along with the image, the Ukrainian Twitter account said, “This is not a ‘meme,’ but our and your realit

The Super Bowl halftime show was historic, whether you liked it or not

It opened on a quick zoom into the streets of Compton. Fireworks marked the celebratory tone of what was to come. With Dr. Dre’s hand covered with the map of his home city, the message to audiences was clear — this performance, like all of Dre’s previous works, would be a faithful tribute to the streets where he came from.

He then placed his hand on an almost-divine-looking mixing board – the same device he’d used many times before to produce some of the most transgressive and important works

If Brady’s NFL journey is over, we’ve just witnessed the greatest career in sports history

After 22 years of professional football, seven Super Bowl rings — more than any single NFL franchise — 84,520 passing yards, 7,263 completions and 15 Pro-Bowl selections, the career of the greatest quarterback of all-time has come to a close — or has it?

Saturday afternoon, ESPN NFL Insiders Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington reported that Tom Brady would be “retiring from football after 22 extraordinary seasons.” Amid a historic blizzard in the region where the quarterback began his career, the

Student deaths at WPI spark renewed concern about mental health on college campuses

On Tuesday, Worcester Polytechnic Institute announced that a student was found dead in an off-campus apartment over the weekend. The cause of death has yet to be released publicly by WPI. This death was the seventh student death WPI had endured in the last seven months, five of which have been confirmed or suspected suicides, underscoring a national uptick in mental health issues among college students since the start of the pandemic.

I think it’s time we forgave Brian Williams

Longtime NBC news anchor Brian Williams announced earlier this week that he’d be leaving NBC News at the end of 2021. Williams has been the host of an MSNBC show, “The 11th Hour,” since September of 2015 after he was removed from his position as anchor of the “NBC Nightly News.”

You probably remember the scandal that caused Williams to be removed from Nightly News. On several platforms and for several years, he told a story that he had been in a helicopter that was hit with an RPG missile and w

Bad calls, beer throwing, and colorful chants: the final moments of Game 4 of the ALDS in Fenway Park

Hunter Renfroe was at bat, with one out on the board and the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 4 of the American League Divisional Series. The whole of Fenway Park on their feet, desperately wanting to go nuts for their team when they topple the statistical empire that is the Tampa Bay Rays.

On a one-two count, Renfroe hits a ball into center field – the same spot Kevin Kiermaier had hit the night before, when the ball ricocheted off of Renfroe and into the bullpen, robbing K
